After we finished reading Thirteen Reasons Why, we decided to read books by one author--the author we chose is Caroline B. Cooney. There are 29 of Caroline Cooney's books in the Union County High School library collection. Each student will choose one of her books from the library collection and will discuss the different books at book club meetings. We will be blogging, making bookmarks, and discussing the books while enjoying yummy snacks. What kind of games or activities can we have a our Caroline B. Cooney Party? Got any ideas?? Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

It's been a long time since we've posted any new comments, but we've still been reading, reading, reading!! The last book that we read was Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. This book is sad and a little disturbing, but the message it sends is that our actions affect other people in ways that we may not expect. Check out reviews of this book from other readers.

Our book club members enjoyed going on our field trip to see the movie, New Moon, after having read the book during the month of November. While getting on the bus and riding over to the Union Square Cinema, anticipation was at a high level. Everyone talked about what the movie would be like, as they hoped they wouldn't be disappointed. Many of the girls couldn't wait to see Edwart and/or Jacob! Everyone was so excited to be able to go!! Comments about the movie were diverse, as some loved the movie (no doubt for Jacob and/or Edward), but others thought the book was much better than the movie. Student thought that this movie was closer to the book than the Twilight movie was. During our book club meeting this week, we will talk more about the comparisons and contrasts between the book and movie.

We've had a very busy week this week, preparing for our field trip to see the movie New Moon! All of our members got their t-shirts yesterday at the meeting and took an easy test to see if everyone would get to go to the movie--and everyone did get to go! See our picture on this blog.
The girls loved seeing Jacob and Edward and were so surprised at the way the movie ended!!

We've just finished our book club meeting today---Carlee talked about the book Pigman by Paul Zindel. She said she really liked it and that it was funny, but because it was written in the 60s, much of the language was different from the way teenagers talk today. Looking back at that time, you could almost call that book historical fiction today.

Also today we announced that our book club would attend the opening day production of New Moon on November 20 during the school day. Everyone received parent permission slips, media forms, and teacher permission slips. These forms must be turned in within days.

We distributed our next book, New Moon, and we'll read the first five chapters.

Also the vote for the book after New Moon is in and the winner is (drum roll) Thirteen Reasons Why.

Hey!
The UCHS book club met today and talked about the next book we'll read, New Moon. We also talked about what we'd like to read after New Moon--we're voting on Pigman by Zindel, Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl, and Thirteen Reasons Why. All book club members need to vote--we'll all read the same book next time and be able to have a large group discussion. Look for information on our field trip that will be coming up soon!!! And let me know what your votes are! T-shirt money needs to be turned in!! And don't forget your dues!

Hi, everyone!
I'm very pleased with the response of our club members to our blog and have enjoyed reading your comments about the books you've been reading. And thanks to Mrs. Taz for joining us!! We meet tomorrow and have our final discussions of Blood and Chocolate and The Hunger Games. We don't think that the comparisons of Blood and Chocolate, Vampire Diaries, and Twilight are accidental. Most students who have read the Hunger Games want to continue reading the sequel, Chatching Fire. I enjoyed The Hunger Games best--to imagine this happening in our lives would be impossible. But you never know what the future holds. New Moon is our next challenge--send me your choices for what you'd like to read after we finish New Moon!! See you tomorrow!

At our meeting on Thursday we talked about the books we've been reading. Or the books we've read! We have students who read so fast that they've finished 4 or 5 books besides the ones the club selected. Each of the students who read Blood and Chocolate spoke about the other books they've read--they basically gave booktalks about their other books so the other members could be knowledgeable about them as well. The Hunger Games readers are a bit slower in finishing their books, but most of them have finished and have started on the sequel. The students enjoy interacting with each other, talking about shared and independent reading. We also talked about our t-shirts--what color, what design, what everything! I picked up a sample color chart from the t-shirt screen printer and talked to him about the design. Some wanted their signatures on their shirts, some wanted sayings, some wanted yellow jackets wearing glasses with books in their hands. This week, I'll meet with each of the members and let them choose their favorite color shirt. I'll also talk to the printer to see if he can help us with a design. We won't have a meeting on October 22, but will meet the Thursday before Halloween.

We had a UCBC book club meeting today and there were some interesting comments about the books we're reading. But what was more interesting was that the book club members were giving me lessons on blogging, from what should be included in the blog to the colors and design our blog should have. I have a lot to learn. Most people have finished reading Blood and Chocolate and the Hunger Games. It's interesting that some of our readers fly through books and have an excellent grasp of the story line, character traits, etc., while others have only read a few chapters. I asked the group to research the books they would like to read for December and January. In November we will be reading New Moon--and will have a field trip!!

Hi, UCBS members! Welcome to the library/bookclub blog spot! As you know, we are reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause.

Thoughts, questions and ideas about The Hunger Games:

1. What do you think of Heymitch? Troublemaker? Untrustworthy? Savior?

2.Which children are the worst off? The ones in the Districts where the children were raised to think that competing to kill other children and possibly die themselves was honorable as in Districts 1 and 2? Or the outlying districts which were so poor that the inhabitants had to forage for the smallest portions?

3. Can you think of other books that remind you of The Hunger Games?

4. Does the opening ceremony remind you of our world events, either past or present?

5. Reality TV has been part of our television history since television was introduced (Candid Camera or the Miss America Pageant). How are our current reality tv shows (competitive and survival) similar to The Hunger Games?
